Riviera Maya
Destination Weddings

Eighty miles of Caribbean coastline where Mayan jungle meets white sand beach — with cenotes, ancient ruins, and one of the most diverse resort landscapes in the Americas sitting in between. The Riviera Maya delivers the full scope of what a destination wedding week can be: a place with genuine texture that guests come home still talking about. Here’s everything you need to plan yours.

Why Riviera Maya

Where the Jungle Meets
the Caribbean

The Riviera Maya runs 80 miles south from Puerto Morelos along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, through Playa del Carmen and Akumal, and down to the edge of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve near Tulum. It is not a single resort zone — it is a corridor of distinct communities, ecosystems, and property types that share a coastline but deliver very different wedding experiences depending on where within it you land.

What separates the Riviera Maya from other Caribbean destinations is the depth of what sits behind the beach. The Yucatán Peninsula is underlaid by the world’s largest known underground river system, and the sinkholes — cenotes — where it surfaces produce one of the most visually arresting experiences in the Western Hemisphere: crystal-clear freshwater pools ringed by jungle, lit from above through cathedral openings in the limestone. No Caribbean island has anything equivalent, and a cenote tour on the afternoon before the welcome dinner is the kind of thing a guest list never stops referencing. Mayan ruins at Tulum, Cobá, and Chichen Itzá sit within day-trip range and add civilizational context to a wedding week that most beach destinations simply cannot provide.

The resort landscape is the most varied of any Mexico destination. From the ultra-luxury enclave of Mayakoba — where Rosewood, Fairmont, Banyan Tree, and Andaz share a private lagoon and jungle reserve — to sprawling all-inclusive complexes with eight venues and dedicated wedding pavilions, to intimate boutique properties built into the jungle a short walk from the beach, the Riviera Maya has the inventory to match every guest count, budget range, and wedding vision with something that fits.

The 10kWedding Advantage

With dozens of wedding-capable resorts spanning 80 miles and four distinct resort zones, the Riviera Maya requires more navigation than most destinations. We know which properties deliver on their venue photography, which coordinator teams are genuinely responsive, and where the room block terms have room to move. That working knowledge — built across real placements at these specific resorts — is what we bring to your planning process at no cost to you.

Why Couples Choose Riviera Maya

What Makes a Riviera Maya
Wedding Work

💧

Cenotes: Freshwater Caves Found Nowhere Else

The Yucatán Peninsula sits above the world’s most extensive known underground river system, and the cenotes where it breaks the surface are among the most visually striking natural features in the Americas. Gran Cenote, Dos Ojos, Cenote Azul, and Cenote Cristalino near Tulum offer snorkeling in water so clear the limestone formations beneath the surface are visible from above. Several Riviera Maya resorts have cenotes within their own grounds. No Caribbean island destination, and no other Mexico destination, can offer a wedding week activity that looks and feels like this. For a guest list of any size, a cenote afternoon is the kind of experience that travels home in the conversation for years.

🌿

Jungle and Ocean in the Same Frame

Unlike the flat, open hotel zones of Cancun, much of the Riviera Maya sits where tropical jungle reaches the shoreline. Tall palms and dense low canopy back directly onto white sand beach at property after property — creating a visual environment with genuine depth and warmth rather than the wide, exposed geometry of a hotel corridor. The eco-parks built into this landscape — Xcaret, Xel-Há, Xenses, Xenotes — offer day-trip programming that puts guests inside the ecosystem rather than adjacent to it. These parks can accommodate large groups with advance booking and serve as an organized group excursion option in the days surrounding the ceremony.

🏛️

Mayan Ruins at Day-Trip Distance

Tulum’s clifftop ruins — perched directly above the Caribbean — are 90 minutes south of the northern Riviera Maya resorts and among the most photographed archaeological sites in Mexico. Cobá, two hours south, offers the last climbable pyramid in the Yucatán region, rising 138 feet above a jungle canopy that stretches to every horizon. Chichen Itzá, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, is a two-to-two-and-a-half hour drive inland. For guests who want historical context alongside beach time, the Riviera Maya is the only major Caribbean destination wedding market where three significant Mayan sites are realistically accessible in under three hours.

🌆

Playa del Carmen: A Real Town on the Corridor

Playa del Carmen’s Quinta Avenida — a pedestrian street running more than 20 blocks parallel to the beach — is lined with independent restaurants, boutiques, bars, and live music venues that have nothing to do with any resort program. Guests who want a dinner off the property have somewhere specific and genuinely good to go. The ferry terminal at the south end of Quinta Avenida connects to Cozumel in 45 minutes, making a reef day trip or an overnight extension on the island a straightforward addition to the wedding week itinerary. Playa is 45 minutes south of CUN and sits at the geographic midpoint of the Riviera Maya corridor.

🐢

Sea Turtle Snorkeling at Akumal

Akumal Bay, midway down the Riviera Maya, hosts one of the most reliable sea turtle snorkeling sites in the Caribbean. Green and loggerhead turtles feed on the seagrass beds in the bay year-round, and guided snorkel tours operate daily in shallow, protected water accessible to swimmers of all levels. The site is 90 minutes south of the northern resort zone — close enough for a half-day excursion — and is consistently cited by couples’ guests as a highlight of the week. Akumal itself is a small village community rather than a resort development, which gives the excursion a low-key, unscripted character that organized eco-park programming cannot replicate.

🏨

The Most Diverse Resort Selection in Mexico

The Riviera Maya’s resort inventory spans a wider range of categories, price tiers, and property characters than any other Mexico destination. The Mayakoba enclave north of Playa del Carmen groups Rosewood, Fairmont, Banyan Tree, and Andaz around a shared lagoon and private jungle reserve — four distinct ultra-luxury properties within a single master-planned community. AMResorts operates multiple Secrets, Dreams, Now, and Zoëtry properties along the corridor for couples prioritizing all-inclusive wedding packages. The Barceló Maya complex, Grand Palladium, and Grand Velas cover large-scale multi-venue all-inclusives capable of handling guest counts well above 200. Boutique jungle properties and intimate adults-only resorts fill the space between. Whatever the guest count, budget, and vision, the inventory exists here to match it.

Planning Essentials

What to Know Before You Book

🌤️

Weather & Best Timing

Peak wedding season runs November through May, when temperatures hold between 75°F and 87°F with low humidity and minimal rainfall. December through April delivers the most consistently dry conditions. Late October and early November offer shoulder-season pricing with weather that is nearly indistinguishable from peak. Hurricane season officially runs June through November, with meaningful risk concentrated between mid-August and mid-October. Sargassum seaweed — a Caribbean-wide seasonal phenomenon — can affect some Riviera Maya beaches between May and October; resorts actively manage collection along their shorelines, and our team tracks conditions by property when advising couples on timing.

📋

Legal Ceremonies

A civil ceremony conducted by a Mexican civil judge is required for a legally binding marriage. The judge reads from the Civil Code and issues the Acta de Matrimonio, which is internationally recognized. Required documents — apostilled birth certificates with certified Spanish translations, valid passports, tourist permits, and applicable divorce or death certificates — should be assembled two to three months in advance. Four witnesses are required at the ceremony. Many Riviera Maya couples opt to complete the legal marriage at home and hold a symbolic ceremony at the resort, eliminating the apostille and translation process from an already demanding planning timeline. Your 10kWedding specialist will walk through both options in detail.

✈️

Getting Your Guests There

Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the gateway for the entire Riviera Maya, with nonstop service from more than 60 U.S. and Canadian cities including New York, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Toronto, and Montreal. Most guests are airborne for three hours or less from the Eastern Seaboard. Transfer time from CUN varies by resort location: northern Riviera Maya properties near Puerto Morelos are 30–40 minutes away; Playa del Carmen resorts are 45–55 minutes; properties near Tulum are 75–90 minutes. We coordinate arrival logistics and group transfer options for room block guests as part of our planning process.

📅

How Early to Book

The most sought-after Riviera Maya properties — particularly those with exclusive beachfront ceremony configurations, jungle cenote venues, or limited wedding dates — commit 12 to 18 months in advance for peak-season events. New Year’s Eve, Valentine’s Day week, and spring break weekends at top-tier resorts can require 18 to 24 months of lead time. Room blocks should be secured alongside the venue reservation; group rates and complimentary upgrade structures are negotiated best before inventory compresses in the fall preceding your wedding year. The earlier we have the conversation, the more leverage we carry into the negotiation.
